Agronomic Field Crop Report - July 14, 2008
- CURRENT QUESTIONS AND POINTS OF INTEREST
-
Spray recommendations for all agronomic crops can be found in Bulletin 545, available at our office or found on line at http://ohioline.osu.edu/b545/pdf/b545.pdf.
-
Alfalfa
Alfalfa leafhopper numbers have been low so far. Instructions for leafhopper sampling can be found at http://ohioline.osu.edu/ent-fact/0033.html
-
Soybeans
Caterpillars and grasshoppers are starting to feed on soybean leaves. Two spotted spider mites are also starting to be found along field borders and in pockets throughout the fields. A new caterpillar pest being found in area fields is the larvae of the Silver Spotted Skipper (see picture below). This larvae feeds around the edges of the leaf and will roll the leaf with a webbing. Scouts are finding brown spot.

-
Corn -
Cereal leaf beetles are moving out of wheat fields into neigboring corn fields, causing a scarring type damage. Treatment should not be needed unless 50% or greater defoliation occurs. Though the first generation moth flight has ended, European Corn borer larvae are still active in field corn, causing both leaf and stalk damage. Non-bt corn should be treated for first generation corn borer if 50% of more of the plants are showing damage and worms are still in the whorl. Corn rootworm adults are starting to emerge.
